What happens in a session?

The First Step
When you contact me, we will arrange to meet for a 30 minute introductory session where you will have the opportunity to tell me what is going on for you and perhaps some thoughts of what you’re hoping to gain from psychotherapy. There will also be plenty of time for you to ask questions about the therapeutic process. This is a 'no strings attached' meeting after which  if you feel it's not right for you there is no obligation to take things further.

What happens next?
After our introductory session, you can have time to reflect on your experience of our initial meeting. If we both feel we’d like to proceed, we will arrange a mutual time within the next two weeks, which will become your weekly session. If I consider that your problems are outside of my experience, I will endeavour put you in contact with therapists or organisations who may be able to  support you.

About your sessions
Regular attendance is important for you to gain maximum benefit from psychotherapy, so I ask you to commit to weekly sessions, allowing for average holiday breaks. Sessions will take place in a calm, comfortable room. (see where I work). Please take a look at ‘My Approach’ page to learn more about how the way in which I work will contribute to our sessions.

How long does psychotherapy take?
This is dependent on a variety of factors, and is therefore difficult to predict, as each individual brings into the therapeutic work specific problems, hopes and expectations from their own diverse and unique life experience. But most importantly, we go at your pace.

I can offer short term therapy for specific and immediate problems, but this could potentially reveal deeper-seated problems which you may decide you want to address. The process can take anything from a few months to  several years. It is ultimately your decision how long you continue therapy, and you may need to balance the commitment in time and money with how much you feel you're benefiting. As and when it feels necessary, we can review our way of working, and decide either to continue working together, or draw the therapy to a conclusion.
