How can psychotherapy help?

An integrative psychotherapist  sees  each client as a unique individual, drawing  on a variety of theoretical approaches, and working collaboratively to establish a safe and trusting relationship. This type of therapeutic relationship, difficult to find elsewhere, is conducive to exploring and understanding problems and challenges, thus creating opportunity for you to discover new and fulfilling ways of living and expanding capacity to make changes that you want to make in your life. Knowing that you have a regular weekly space enables you feel less on your own with your struggles, helping you gain clarity about your situation, The experience of being really listened to as you talk about important experiences in your life and explore problems and feelings within the safety of a therapeutic relationship can bring a sense of relief.

Psychotherapeutic support is a valuable resource for a variety of problems. Maybe you’re aware of a specific issue you feel you need support with, such as anxiety and stress, depression, extreme emotions, bereavement, substance abuse, relationship problems, lack of confidence, low self-esteem, isolation, and the effects of past or present physical or psychological trauma.

Perhaps you’re uncertain what the problem is --- you just have a feeling of being stuck and unfulfilled or disappointed in life, in emotional pain and experiencing a general sense of futility. You might be feeling overwhelmed, struggling to cope, or feeling disconnected from all that used to be meaningful in life. Maybe you’re realising that you’re unintentionally repeating self-defeating behaviours or damaging relationships. Perhaps emotional distress or a psychosomatic illness has taken you to your GP and you’re left feeling there must be something more than the limited time and medications offered to you. (However, if you are taking  prescribed medication, I encourage you to follow the advice from your GP whilst seeing me.)

Or perhaps you’re experiencing a change in direction, or going through a transitional phase in life, triggering something of a more existential nature, spiritual unrest, or feelings of insecurity, loss or separation, which you’d like to explore.

The benefits of psychotherapy
I recognise that it can take time to build trust in a therapist, and feel safe enough to talk openly about yourself, particularly if you have experienced difficult relationships in the past. I believe it's crucial that we work at your pace with the problems that you bring to therapy, so therefore I have no expectations of you, and I don’t put pressure on you to change. However, below are some of the benefits you may find you experience during and as a result of your commitment to your therapeutic journey, and my professional, compassionate support. Although psychotherapy is often not a quick fix, or a total transformation, the benefits are deep and long lasting.

Benefits include:
  • A  deeper self-awareness enabling you to make more informed choices in life
  • Insight and ability to let go of self-defeating, self-destructive behaviours
  • Improved self-esteem and confidence
  • A better relationship with yourself and others
  • An understanding of difficult moods and emotions
  • Clarity and a new sense of perspective on life

  • Greater openness to new experiences and opportunity.
